WaterUp is a community engagement project run in partnership between the global consultancy firm Arup and the UK based NGO The Flow Partnership. It is delivering tangible and transformational positive change to rural communities living with drought through digitally enabled water upskilling.
WaterUp uses traditional knowledge and engineering techniques developed in arid and semi-arid environments to capture and store seasonal rainfall for use throughout the year. This enables landscape and ecosystem restoration through increased surface water availability and groundwater aquifer recharge, with the additional benefit of flood and drought risk reduction. These features provide consistent and reliable access to water all year round alongside a plethora of other societal and environmental benefits. A language-neutral, educational film explaining these principles and methods, equips people with the knowledge of fundamental hydrological principles and what is required to build their own water retention features.
This digitally enabled educational tool will be freely and globally accessible from the Water School to upskill local people, catalyse widespread change and enable landscape restoration in support of SDG 6: clean water and sanitation for all.
